1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1961 1¢ Pr WDDR-020, this Proof doubled die reverse from the 1961 Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a spread directed towards the center on the designer's initials FG, ONE CENT, AMERICA, and the right cornice of the Memorial building. The centripetal displacement — a hallmark of Class II distorted hub doubling — indicates that the secondary hub impression was shifted inward relative to the first, and the involvement of the right cornice alongside three inscription groups gives this variety a broader coverage footprint than many other close-spread DDRs in the series. The right cornice, a horizontal architectural element crowning the Memorial's colonnade, provides a particularly useful visual reference because its straight, well-defined edge reveals even subtle inward displacement as a slight thickening or shelf effect. No significant obverse die markers have been recorded, but the reverse carries a short vertical die gouge to the right of the M in UNUM, serving as a reliable authentication diagnostic independent of the doubling itself. The photographs documenting this variety were taken by Brian Ribar. No other cross-references to CONECA or additional attribution services are known. Collectors examining Proof specimens for this variety should begin with the right cornice and the FG initials, where the centripetal spread tends to be most readily visible, before confirming the die gouge near the M in UNUM.
