1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
Error
Description
Struck as a Proof at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018 exhibits a close clockwise spread that registers on the upper letters of AMERICA, the designer's initials FG, and the lower letters of ONE CENT. The CW rotational direction of the spread indicates a Class V pivoted hub doubling event, where the hub rotated slightly in a clockwise direction between successive impressions, distributing visible displacement across both the upper and lower reverse inscriptions while affecting the designer's monogram as well. On Proof coinage, where the fields are deeply mirrored and design elements carry their full intended relief, even a close rotational spread can be discerned under moderate magnification by tracing the serif edges and crossbar terminals of the affected letters. This die carries distinctive markers on both faces: on the obverse, a die gouge can be found near the rim to the left of the I in IN, providing a quick initial screening point for candidate specimens. On the reverse, a short die gouge sits above the left side of the T in UNITED, offering a second independent diagnostic for confirmation. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under the designation 1961 1¢ Pr WDDR-018 with no other known cross-references, this variety occupies a position in the latter half of the extensive 1961 Proof DDR population, and its dual-surface die markers make it more straightforwardly attributable than many of its close-spread counterparts.
