1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-251 and DMR-028 across three recognized die stages, this 1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar doubled die reverse displays a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED, and AMERICA, with lighter spread on the eagle. Three stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in middle die state, and Stage C remaining unconfirmed in late die state. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar design served from 1948 through 1963, making the 1961 proof part of the series' penultimate production cycle before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced it following President Kennedy's assassination. Philadelphia struck all proof Franklin Half Dollars, and the careful preparation of proof dies — polished to produce mirror fields and frosted devices — made hub doubling especially visible against reflective surfaces. The reverse eagle, rendered in fine detail with spread wings and an olive branch, provides multiple reference points where the medium spread manifests. Progressive die deterioration across three stages offers collectors the opportunity to study how doubling appearance evolves as the die wears.
