1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021
Error
Description
Representing one of the more pronounced entries in the latter portion of the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR sequence, WDDR-021 carries a strong spread directed towards the center on the designer's initials FG, ONE CENT, USA, and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The characterization as "strong" in the Wexler classification system distinguishes this variety from the many close and very close spreads that dominate the 1961 DDR population, signaling that the centripetal displacement is wide enough to be detected at relatively low magnification — typically 5x or even with a strong loupe. The Class II distorted hub doubling affects four distinct inscription areas plus the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto, covering a substantial portion of the reverse design and indicating a relatively pronounced misregistration between successive hub impressions during die manufacture. No significant obverse markers have been recorded, but the reverse carries a diagnostic short vertical die gouge above the left side of the second T in STATES, providing a confirmation point that is situated well away from the doubling zones and thus unlikely to be confused with the doubled design elements themselves. The photographs documenting this variety were taken by Brian Ribar. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1961 1¢ Pr WDDR-021, this Proof variety has no other known cross-references and stands as a relatively accessible target for collectors given its strong spread and identifiable reverse die marker.
