1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Standing out as one of the strongest doubled die reverse varieties in the 1961 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent series, WDDR-008 is defined by close Class II quadrupling spread towards the center on the horizontal crossbars of the letters in ONE CENT, accompanied by strong doubling and tripling on the letters of USA, EPU, the dots, the designer's initials, and CENT. The presence of quadrupling — four overlapping impressions rather than the typical two — indicates that the reverse die received at least four discernible hub impressions with progressive misalignment, a relatively unusual occurrence that amplifies the visual impact of the doubling beyond what most DDR varieties exhibit. The term "quadrupling" distinguishes this variety from standard doubled dies and places it among the more dramatic examples of multi-impression hub error in the series. Cross-referenced by CONECA as 9-R-II, this is one of the few 1961 Proof DDR varieties to carry an independent attribution from a second major cataloging organization. Die markers on the reverse include a short vertical die gouge to the right of the bottom of the T in CENT and a short die gouge below the C in CENT, both providing reliable authentication points. No obverse die markers have been noted. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1961 1¢ Pr WDDR-008, this Proof variety's combination of quadrupled design elements, CONECA cross-referencing, and clear reverse die markers makes it one of the more readily attributable and visually compelling entries in the 1961 doubled die reverse family.
