1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
The 1961 Proof Franklin Half Dollar DDR-002, cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-166 and DMR-014, shows extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM with visible division lines. A light triple spread affects the P of PLURIBUS and the first U of UNUM. Stage A represents the EDS (early die state, unconfirmed). Stage B is MDS (middle die state) with both obverse and reverse confirmed at this stage. Stage C represents the LDS (late die state, unconfirmed). Proof Franklin Half Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint on specially prepared planchets using polished dies, yielding the mirror-like fields and frosted devices characteristic of proof coinage. The Franklin Half Dollar series of 1948–1963 consists of 90% silver coins, and all proof issues in the series were produced at Philadelphia. The distinctive E PLURIBUS UNUM spread with division lines makes this variety identifiable on high-quality proof surfaces where the detail of the lettering stands out clearly.
