Description
This is an improperly annealed nickel - overheated during production, causing copper to migrate to the surface. That's why it's dark but still has sharp detail and luster. Not environmental damage, not someone's science experiment. The Mint did this. Black Beauties are most common on 1958 and 1959 Philly nickels, but they show up across other late-50s and early-60s dates too. This 1961 is one of mine.
