1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
ErrorDescription
Showing hub doubling spread toward the center on multiple reverse legend elements, the 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar WDDR-012 displays secondary contours on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED, and HALF DOLLAR on John R. Sinnock's reverse featuring the Liberty Bell. The centerward spread — where the secondary image is pulled inward relative to the primary — is a hallmark of Class II distorted hub doubling, and its effect across three separate inscription groups demonstrates broad hub displacement affecting a large zone of the reverse die. A small die gouge to the right of the top of the I in AMERICA provides a reverse die marker for confirming identification. No significant obverse markers have been noted. The proof status is confirmed by the Wexler catalog designation (1960 50c Pr WDDR-012), placing this among the proof Franklin Half Dollars struck at Philadelphia on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies. The Franklin Half Dollar (1948-1963) was Sinnock's second major coin design after the Roosevelt Dime, and 1960 falls in the series' penultimate era — the Kennedy Half Dollar would replace it in 1964. Struck in 90% silver at 12.50 grams and 30.6mm diameter. Examine EPU, UNITED, and HALF DOLLAR for the centerward spread, then locate the die gouge right of I in AMERICA.
