1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 50-cent Proof WDDR-011, this Franklin Half Dollar shows a very close spread towards the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and HALF DOLLAR — inscription groups on opposite sides of John R. Sinnock's Liberty Bell reverse. The "towards the center" direction means the secondary hub impression shifted inward, creating a tightening effect where the doubled image appears slightly compressed rather than expanded. This inward displacement is characteristic of Class II hub doublings where the die surface contracted during hubbing. The "very close" qualifier means primary and secondary impressions nearly coincide, producing subtle letter broadening rather than separated images. No significant die markers were noted on either side, and no cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 1960 Proof Franklin Half Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 12.5 grams — a substantial coin whose large format aids detection of subtle hub doubling. The Franklin series (1948-1963) was succeeded by the Kennedy Half Dollar. Examine E PLURIBUS UNUM and HALF DOLLAR under 10x magnification, comparing letter widths against a known normal proof.
