Description

Presenting its doubling on the designer's initials and the lower part of the letters in ONE CENT, WDDR-008 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike concentrates its hub doubling in the denomination and attribution areas of the reverse. The close spread requires careful scrutiny under magnification, as the displacement is subtle enough that casual inspection may not reveal the secondary impression. What distinguishes this die from others in the WDDR series is its richly detailed set of obverse markers: a small die gouge sits to the left of the G in GOD, a die scratch runs southwest from the center of the nine in the date, die scratches run north-northeast from the top of the 19 in the date, and parallel die scratches run east-northeast from the lower front of the chin, with other die scratches scattered throughout the obverse. This abundance of obverse diagnostics provides multiple avenues for confirming the die pairing before even examining the reverse for the doubled die characteristics. On the reverse, no significant die markers have been identified, meaning attribution relies on the combination of the obverse die scratches and the doubling itself. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-008 with no other known cross-references, the Large Date designation places this variety in the first production phase at Philadelphia.
