Description

Particularly well documented among 1960 doubled die reverse varieties, WDDR-007 on the Large Date regular strike has been traced through two distinct die stages on both the obverse and reverse, providing collectors with a detailed roadmap for identifying this variety at different points in the die's service life. The doubling itself presents as a close spread on the designer's initials, ONE CENT, and the lower letters in USA — the same reverse characteristics seen on the Small Date counterpart but documented here under the earlier Large Date hub type. In Stage A, the obverse carries a small die gouge appearing as a dot to the right of the chin, while the reverse shows a die scratch running northwest to southeast above the L in PLURIBUS and a die scratch running northeast from the top left of the N in CENT. By Stage B, the obverse markers from Stage A have weakened considerably but remain visible with careful examination, and the reverse has developed numerous die scratches running southwest to northeast through the last two Memorial bays and to the right of the Memorial building. This evolution from Stage A to Stage B illustrates how secondary die diagnostics change while the primary hub doubling persists unchanged. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-007 with no other known cross-references, the dual-stage documentation makes this one of the more thoroughly recorded DDR varieties in the 1960 Large Date roster.
