Description

Notable for its Cohen Index cross-reference as Cohen Lg60P-54 and documented by Cuds on Coins with a cross-reference date of January 20, 2021, SKH-1c-1960-07(LD) is the seventh spiked head variety on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date. A spiked head error forms when a die gouge or die crack extends outward from Lincoln's head, creating a projecting spike from the portrait. This particular die carries an additional diagnostic feature called out in the attribution notes: an obverse die crack above the V.D.B. designer's initials, indicated by black arrows in the reference images. The die crack above V.D.B. provides a reliable secondary marker for confirming this specific working die, as the crack's position on the truncation of Lincoln's bust — near Frank Gasparro's inherited Victor David Brenner initials — is both distinctive and easy to locate under modest magnification. The Cohen Lg60P-54 designation confirms formal inclusion in the Cohen reference literature, making this one of the better-documented spiked head varieties in the 1960 Large Date series. The Large Date regular strike classification places this die in Philadelphia's first production phase. Between the spiked head, the die crack above V.D.B., and the Cohen cross-reference, collectors have multiple attribution anchors for confidently identifying this variety.
