1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
ErrorDescription
Carrying some of the most extensive die markers in the 1960 DDR catalog, WDDR-020 on the Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike exhibits a strong spread towards the center on UNITED, ONE CENT, and the designer's initials. The "strong" characterization distinguishes this variety from the many close or very close spreads that populate the surrounding WDDR numbers, indicating that the doubling is visible under moderate magnification without the demanding examination required for subtler entries. The obverse die is richly marked: a die scratch runs from southwest to northeast through the six in the date, numerous other die scratches appear throughout the obverse, and a die crack runs north from the top of the ear to the rim, passing by the D in GOD — a progressive structural failure that indicates this die saw substantial use. On the reverse, die scratches run from southwest to northeast through the ED in UNITED, with numerous other die scratches scattered throughout. The presence of a die crack alongside the doubling suggests specimens struck later in the die's life may show both the doubled die characteristics and visible die deterioration simultaneously. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-020 with no other known cross-references, the Large Date attribution places this die in Philadelphia's first production phase of the year.
