Description

The Large Date counterpart to WDDR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike carries the same strong Class VI extra thickness with Class II separation spread towards the center affecting USA, ONE CENT, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, the designer's initials, and both sides of the Memorial building. Three obverse and three reverse die stages document the die's evolution. Obverse Stage A diagnostics include numerous short die scratches above the RTY and to the right of the Y in LIBERTY, a die scratch southwest from the lower left D in GOD, and a short die scratch south-southeast from the underside of the chin. Stage B matches Stage A. Stage C introduces die scratches on the back of the neck, a horizontal scratch below the D in GOD, scratches to the right of the upper profile, and a die gouge to the right of the upper lip. On the reverse, Stage A shows two parallel die scratches on the left Memorial base, a die gouge below the U in UNITED, a light scratch on the right Memorial base, and a short scratch above the statue's head. Stage B adds scratches through the upper NI of UNITED, a strong die gouge on the right side of the T in UNITED, and a gouge between T and E of UNITED. Stage C introduces scratches from the NU in UNUM, from the S in PLURIBUS, from the right cornice, from the lower right I in AMERICA, and through the Memorial bays on the right side. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-002 and Coppercoins 1960P-1DR-006, this variety is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-003. The Large Date attribution places the die in the first production phase at Philadelphia, and collectors must verify the date numeral proportions to distinguish this listing from its Small Date sibling.
