Description

Sharing the same Wexler designation as its Small Date sibling, WDDR-001 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike carries identical reverse doubling characteristics: strong Class VI extra thickness with Class II separation spread towards the center on USA, ONE CENT, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, the designer's initials, and both sides of the Memorial building. The Large Date hub was employed during the first phase of Philadelphia's 1960 cent production, and this listing documents how the variety presents under that hub type. The die has been traced through four obverse stages and four reverse stages. Obverse Stage A diagnostics include an indentation between the upper W and E of WE, a die scratch above the 9, a long die scratch to the left of Lincoln's lower head passing to the right of the Y in LIBERTY, a short die scratch from the upper left of the Y, a die scratch from the upper back of the shoulder, and die scratches between the upper T and Y of LIBERTY. Stage B weakens these markers and introduces a die gouge between the upper I and B of LIBERTY. Stage C eliminates the WE depression and further weakens the LIBERTY scratches. Stage D matches Stage C. Reverse Stage A shows a die gouge below the left M in AMERICA; Stage B adds gouges between R and I and to the left of the upper second A in AMERICA; Stage C introduces gouges at STATES and a die crack on the right cornice; Stage D shows a die chip on the upper 12th Memorial column. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-II+VI, Crawford CDDR-001, and Coppercoins 1960P-1DR-002, this variety is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-001. Collectors should verify the Large Date numeral proportions before assigning this parent attribution.
