1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Among the more diagnostically rich doubled die reverse varieties on the 1960-D Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDR-002 displays doubling on the D in UNITED, the STA in STATES, and EPU of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Wexler designation is 1960-D 1¢ WDDR-002. This variety's obverse die doubles as a repunched mintmark, cross-listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1960-D 1¢ WRPM-086 — described as a D/D tilted (rotated) — making this a dual-variety die of considerable interest to both DDR and RPM collectors. The obverse carries several identifying die markers: die scratches run NE from the front of the vest to the left of the date and mint mark, die scratches run mostly E/W through LIBERTY, and a strong die scratch runs SE from the bottom of the one in the date. On the reverse, a die scratch runs NW from the top left of the N in ONE. The Large Date obverse confirms this die was prepared from the original 1960 hub before the Small Date transition. Collectors who locate the tilted RPM on the obverse should also examine the reverse lettering for the doubled D, STA, and EPU, as confirming both varieties on a single coin significantly enhances its attribution value.
