1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and recognized among the "Best Of" nickel doubled die varieties, WDDR-014 on the 1960-D Jefferson nickel is a Class VI doubled die reverse — distended hub doubling that produces a characteristic spreading effect on design elements. Strong Class VI doubling is clearly visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a very nice spread shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, making this one of the more visually satisfying DDR varieties in the Jefferson nickel series. Class VI doubling occurs when the design on the hub is slightly distorted — typically from the metal of the hub flowing or spreading during the hubbing process — resulting in design elements that appear stretched or thickened rather than showing the crisp secondary image associated with Class I-V doubling types. Key reverse die markers include a die gouge below the M of AMERICA, two slanted die scratches to the right of the D of UNITED, and distinctive x-shaped die scratches to the lower right of the S of CENTS. No notable obverse die markers have been identified. The Denver Mint struck over 192 million nickels in 1960, making the base date common, but WDDR-014's strong doubling and "Best Of" status elevate it well above face value among variety specialists.
