1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDR-009 of the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel presents Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with a very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM — a separation so narrow that the secondary image nearly overlaps the primary, requiring careful magnification to resolve. The very close spread means the distorted hub's deformation was subtle, producing a thin band of displaced metal rather than a wide secondary image. Diagnostic die markers confirm the specific working die: die gouges through the lower portions of the first T and A of STATES, and two slanted die scratches between the F and I of FIVE — a constellation unique to this die that provides attribution independent of the doubling. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was produced in large quantities at Denver, placing this variety within an accessible date that rewards systematic searching. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse provides the architectural backdrop against which E PLURIBUS UNUM carries its very close Class II displacement. Collectors should examine UNUM with particular care, as the rounded letterforms can amplify even very close doubling into a detectable secondary contour.
