1960-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel WDDR-005 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a pronounced spread directed toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with slight doubling also visible on FIVE CENTS. The spread increases from left to right across the inscriptions. The obverse carries two die scratches running between the rim and collar under the entire base of Jefferson's bust. Reverse die markers include a die scratch through the left side of the first O in MONTICELLO and horizontal die scratches through CENT of CENTS. This regular strike Denver issue demonstrates the characteristic center-directed displacement pattern of Class II hub doubling, where design elements shift inward rather than outward. The left-to-right progression of doubling intensity across the reverse lettering suggests the distortion axis ran at an angle to the die face during the hubbing error. The WDDR-005 offers strong doubling on the key reverse inscriptions that makes it identifiable under moderate magnification.
