Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1667 and DMR-011, this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-009 displays medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right across these inscriptions. The left-to-right increasing pattern is diagnostically significant as it reverses the diminishing pattern more commonly seen in pivoted hub doubling, indicating that the pivot point for this particular hub displacement lies to the left side of the die rather than the right, concentrating maximum displacement on the rightmost inscription elements. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed; Stage B at mid-die-state is identified by numerous die scratches running east-west on the reverse, with the obverse in EDS; Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The east-west die scratches on the Stage B reverse likely resulted from die maintenance polishing, and their abundance provides a strong diagnostic marker for identifying mid-state specimens. The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design, depicting Thomas Jefferson's neoclassical Virginia home, provided the canvas for this doubling pattern across its inscriptions.
