Description
Documented by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-1035 and DMR-009, DDR-007 on the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel displays medium spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with a distinctive directional gradient — the doubling intensity increases from left to right across both inscriptions. This progressive left-to-right intensification is characteristic of a pivoted or rotational hub displacement where the secondary impression was rotated clockwise relative to the primary, generating minimal offset at the left end of each inscription and maximum displacement at the right end. On UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, this gradient means the U of UNITED shows the least detectable thickening while the final A of AMERICA exhibits the most pronounced extra thickness, providing a built-in authentication feature that distinguishes genuine hub doubling from machine doubling or strike doubling, which typically produces uniform shelf-like displacement rather than progressive gradients. Three die stages are documented: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), while Stages B (Mid Die State) and C (Late Die State) remain unconfirmed — indicating that documented specimens have so far only surfaced in the earliest die condition, leaving open the possibility that later-stage examples with additional die deterioration features may exist but have not yet been reported to the VarietyVista cataloging team. The 1960-D was struck at the Denver Mint in standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition at 5 grams, part of a year that also produced the famous 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Cent. Medium intensity spread on two major reverse inscriptions makes this variety visible under 7x magnification with focused raking light.
