Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-R-II and cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-001 for the 1959 Washington quarter, this Philadelphia-struck silver quarter displays a close spread towards the center on QUARTER, the lower leaves, the ends of both branches, and the edges of the tail feathers. The variety uses the Type B reverse die, an important attribution detail since Washington quarters of this era employed multiple reverse hub types. On the obverse, light die scratches run north-northwest to south-southeast between IN GOD WE TRUST and the bust. The reverse shows die scratches running south-southwest to north-northeast between the lower left wing and the rim. As a 90% silver issue from the penultimate era of circulating silver coinage, this doubled die reverse combines numismatic variety appeal with precious metal content. The widespread doubling across the heraldic eagle's botanical and feather elements makes WDDR-001 a cornerstone variety for Washington quarter specialists.
