1959 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Struck from a late die state obverse paired with a doubled reverse die, WDDR-011 is a doubled die reverse variety found on 1959 Lincoln Memorial cents from the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse exhibits characteristics of a late die state (LDS), including a prominent die crack running from the top of Lincoln's ear in a NNE direction to the rim, passing between the W and E of WE TRUST. Late die state coins often show weakened design details and additional die cracks or breaks that developed as the die fatigued during extended use. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found on the roof above the 11th Memorial column, providing a quick identification point for collectors searching through 1959 cents. The presence of the obverse die crack makes this variety particularly easy to locate during roll searching, as the crack is visible to the unaided eye and serves as a signpost to examine the reverse more carefully for the doubled die characteristics.
