Description

Among the more visually dramatic proof doubled die reverses from 1959, WDDR-009 presents extra thickness and a pronounced spread towards the center on the letters of USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE CENT, the designer's initials, and both sides of the lower Memorial structure. The breadth of affected design elements across virtually the entire reverse legend sets this variety apart from the more localized doubled dies of the same date. Proof surfaces amplify the doubling's visibility, making this an attractive show piece. Reverse die markers include a die gouge appearing as a dot on the lower left E of AMERICA, a die scratch running southwest from the center left of the R of AMERICA, and die gouges extending from the rim above the second A and upper left C of AMERICA. The obverse carries no noted die markers. As a first-year Memorial proof with widespread doubling, WDDR-009 occupies a notable position in any comprehensive 1959 cent variety collection.
