1959 Proof Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Sharing the same reverse die as the variety listed under WDDR-008 in the Wexler catalog, this proof doubled die reverse from the 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent carries CONECA designation 1-R-II+V, indicating the combination of a Class II spread towards the center and a Class V counterclockwise rotational spread. The reverse die markers are distinctive: numerous die scratches appear in the last Memorial bay, a die gouge in the form of a small dot can be found near the rim above the N in UNITED, and another die gouge sits to the right of the upper 2nd S of STATES. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The dual-class doubling on a proof die makes this variety especially desirable, as the polished proof surfaces allow collectors to study the compound hub misalignment with exceptional clarity. The combination of Class II and Class V characteristics reveals that the die received its second hub impression with both a translational and a rotational offset.
