A proof striking from 1959, this WDDR-003 Lincoln Memorial cent shows a close spread towards the center on STATES OF AMERICA and the designer's initials. Proof doubled dies from the Memorial series debut year are scarce finds, since the controlled striking environment of proof production makes hub doubling events less frequent than on business strike dies. The obverse carries no significant die markers, placing the attribution burden entirely on the reverse, where a small die gouge—appearing as a dot—can be found above the right side of the second U in PLURIBUS. Because proof surfaces preserve die markers with exceptional clarity, this single reverse diagnostic is generally sufficient for confident attribution.
