1959 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1959-01-2
Error
Description
Cataloged as TDC-1c-1959D-01, this typical die clash was discovered on a 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent by Bob Piazza. The coin also bears a repunched mintmark designated as 1959D-1MM-005, making it a dual-variety piece of interest to both die clash and RPM collectors. The obverse exhibits a simple die clash mark consisting of the top, left roof line of the Memorial building, transferred from the reverse die during a clashless strike when the dies came together without a planchet. Unlike the obverse, the reverse die was abraded after the clash event, removing the transferred obverse design marks from the reverse surface. When dies clash, the softer or more accessible die surface is sometimes dressed to remove the evidence while the opposing die remains in service with its clash marks intact, which is precisely the scenario documented here. This combination of a retained obverse clash mark with a cleaned reverse provides a useful case study in Mint die maintenance practices during 1959.
