1959 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

From the inaugural year of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse, this tenth documented doubled die reverse for the 1959 Philadelphia Mint issue shows a close spread toward the center on ONE CENT and designer's initials FG. The centering direction — inward rather than outward — indicates the hub's offset during the second impression moved elements toward the die's center axis. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1959 1¢ WDDR-010, this variety carries significance as a first-year-of-design doubled die. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running east from the vest to the bottom of the one in the date and a vertical die scratch in the field right of the bowtie. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits right of the upper T in CENT, and a die scratch runs west-southwest to east-northeast above the left cornice of the Memorial building. Ten doubled die reverses for the first year of the Memorial reverse reflects the immediate research interest collectors brought to this new design type, and doubling on ONE CENT combined with the designer's initials affects the most prominent reverse elements.
