Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler as WDDR-003, this 1959 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel showcases Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) with a pronounced spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that increases in intensity from left to right—a telltale signature of rotational distortion during the hubbing process. Closer doubling also appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the right side of the Monticello building. The obverse carries a die dot below the L of LIBERTY, while the reverse shows a die dot to the lower right of the long left window. The progressive nature of the spread across the motto gives this variety a visually compelling quality that makes it popular among Jefferson nickel specialists. As a business strike from the final year before the 1960s design refinements, WDDR-003 holds a transitional-era appeal.
