1959-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Displaying a close spread towards the center on the designer's initials and the lower letters of ONE CENT, WDDR-004 is cataloged as Wexler 1959-D 1¢ WDDR-004. The obverse die paired with this doubled reverse carries distinctive markers: two parallel die scratches run northeast from the forehead, three short parallel die scratches run southwest from the lower back of Lincoln's head, and numerous other die scratches can be found throughout the obverse. On the reverse, several die scratches run east to west above the statue of Lincoln within the Memorial, and nearly horizontal die scratches pass through the lower UN of UNUM. These die markers across both surfaces create a reliable identification cluster for collectors sorting through 1959-D cents. The close spread towards center on the ONE CENT inscription and FG initials is consistent with a hub doubling event in which the second impression was shifted slightly inward, producing the characteristic separation lines that distinguish this class of die variety from mechanical doubling or die deterioration effects.
