Description

Produced under Proof striking conditions at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1958 Lincoln Wheat Cent die break carries the distinction of appearing on the absolute final year of the wheat reverse in any format. Hardy classification 4FH+4 and cross-reference Cohen 58-B602 identify this as the same die variety documented on business strikes, but the Proof version exhibits the break with enhanced clarity from multiple-strike Proof manufacture and polished die surfaces. Full-height die breaks at position 4 between B and E of LIBERTY are dramatic on mirror-finish Proof surfaces, where the raised bar contrasts sharply with the reflective field. The 1958 Proof set was among the last Philadelphia Mint Proof issues before production transferred to San Francisco in 1968. Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse, introduced in 1909 and produced for half a century, ended its run with 1958.
