Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with a very light spread visible on E PLURIBUS on Felix Schlag's original Jefferson Nickel reverse, DDR-004 for the 1958 issue documents subtle hub doubling on the Monticello reverse that was in continuous use from the series' 1938 introduction through 2003. The technical classification assigns this variety UVC-969 and DMR-006, with three documented die stages tracking the die's progression from early to late states: Stage A represents the early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B the mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C identifies both the reverse and obverse as late die state specimens showing accumulated wear and fatigue. The progression through three stages indicates this die pair remained in service long enough to develop visible deterioration markers that changed its appearance over the course of its production life. The 1958 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was produced during the final full year before significant compositional and production changes affected American coinage in the 1960s. E PLURIBUS UNUM appears on the Monticello reverse above the building's dome, and the light doubling on these letters represents the faint secondary impression left when the hub and die were not perfectly aligned during one of the multiple hubbing operations. Jefferson Nickel doubled die varieties from the 1950s occupy a well-documented segment of the die variety hobby, with VarietyVista's systematic cataloging providing die stage data that helps collectors identify the relative scarcity of early versus late die state specimens.
