1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

WDDR-005 of the 1957 Lincoln wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler Team, displays extra thickness on the lower left wheat ear and stem, OF AMERICA, the lower right wheat ear and stem, and slightly on EPLU and the intervening dot. The doubling affects both wheat ears symmetrically, which is consistent with a hub-doubling event centered on the reverse die. Obverse die markers include a die crack on the cheek behind the eye, a die crack on the forehead, and a die crack curving upward through the upper hair, suggesting this obverse die saw considerable use. The reverse carries a die crack from the right wheat to the rim at approximately 3:30 and vertical die scratches between the N in CENT and the first S in STATES. The 1957 Philadelphia issue was among the final Lincoln wheat cents, with the Memorial reverse replacing it in 1959. Die deterioration markers on the obverse indicate this die pairing was used well into its production life.
