1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Proof doubled die reverse on the 1957 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent, catalogued under Wexler Variety ID 1957 1c Pr WDDR-014. Proof cents of this era were struck from specially prepared dies and show mirrored fields that make doubling more visible under proper lighting. The spread is toward the center and appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, and both upper wheat ears, diminishing in intensity from left to right. Die markers are documented on both sides. The obverse carries a short vertical die scratch south of the N of IN, short vertical die scratches to the left of the upper and lower W of WE, and a small die gouge to the left of the lower 7. The reverse carries three markers: a small die gouge as a dot above the right side of the first T in STATES, and two small die gouges above the ES in STATES. The left-to-right decreasing spread across EPU and both wheat ears is the primary identification step.
