Description

Proof production at the Philadelphia Mint generated DDR-015 for the 1957 Lincoln wheat cent, a variety showing light spread on the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and both upper wheat ears on the reverse. The proof designation indicates this variety originated from specially prepared dies used for the collector proof sets that Philadelphia produced exclusively throughout the wheat cent era, with 1957 proof production totaling approximately 1.25 million sets. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1910 and DMR-023, documenting three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse surfaces show confirmed mid die state characteristics, and Stage C where both surfaces have progressed to confirmed late die state. The MDS and LDS confirmations for Stages B and C establish that this die served through a substantial portion of its useful life, with documented specimens at multiple wear stages. Light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both upper wheat ears covers the central-to-upper reverse area of Victor David Brenner's wheat cent design, where the motto runs in a straight line above ONE CENT and the wheat stalks curve upward along both sides. The wheat ears' organic contours — with their fine parallel grain lines and tapered tips — provide surfaces where even light hub doubling can be detected as slightly displaced secondary impressions of individual grain details.
