1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Found on the 1957 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, WDDR-010 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right. A very close spread also appears on FIVE CENTS. The Class II mechanism produces variable-width separation across the die face rather than uniform displacement. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge from the right side of the N in IN, a short horizontal gouge in the upper part of the 5, circular-patterned die scratches on Jefferson's forehead and cheek, and an x-shaped die scratch under the chin. Reverse markers include die scratches through the lower portions of RIB of PLURIBUS, a scratch through LLO of MONTICELLO, and a diagonal scratch inside the upper right small semi-circular arch. The circular forehead scratches and x-shaped chin scratch create a distinctive fingerprint for this die pair. Jefferson nickels from 1957 were produced in large quantities at Philadelphia, but doubled die reverses with confirmed Class II hub distortion remain collectible finds.
