Description

Sharing the same catalog number as its business strike counterpart but struck as a proof, this 1956 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent die break records the identical four-stage progression on proof surfaces. Stage 1 begins with a die crack on the right wheat stalk before any BIE development. Stage 3 shows the die chip between B and E of LIBERTY growing considerably, cross-referenced as Cohen B903. By Stage 4, the chip has expanded into a full BIE — a raised vertical bar resembling the letter I between B and E — cross-referenced as Cohen B620. The variety carries Cohen 56-BA704 and Hardy 56P-4SCH designations. On proof surfaces, where mirror-like fields provide maximum contrast against raised elements, the progressive growth from minor irregularity to full BIE is especially dramatic. Proof dies at Philadelphia were prepared with polished surfaces and struck at lower speeds with greater pressure, producing coins where die deterioration appears in sharp relief.
