1956 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Progressive die deterioration makes this 1956 Proof Franklin Half Dollar DDR-006 particularly instructive: at Stage B, a die break appears between the upper I and B in PLURIBUS, and by Stage C that break extends downward to encompass the lower I and B as well — documenting gradual mechanical failure across production. The primary doubled die shows medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM with extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, providing two attribution areas. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-104 with die marker reference DMR-018 and classified as reverse die variety RDV-002, three die states are documented. As a proof issue, this Franklin Half Dollar was struck at Philadelphia on polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields that make the progressive die break between IB particularly visible. The Franklin Half Dollar, designed by John R. Sinnock, was struck from 1948 through 1963, and proof DDRs from this series carry the dual appeal of proof quality and documented die variety.
