1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Carrying Wexler designation WDDR-014 for the 1956 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety exhibits a Class II spread toward the center on both wheat ears and stems, along with extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the flanking dots. Class II distorted hub doubling creates this centripetal displacement when angular misalignment shifts the secondary impression inward toward the design center, producing the strongest doubling on peripheral elements farthest from the die's center. The wheat ears and stems show the doubled impressions most clearly because they occupy the outer portions of the reverse. Obverse die markers include a die gouge south of the RT in LIBERTY, a specific positional marker helping narrow identification to this working die. On the reverse, several die scratches run south from the bottom of the T in CENT, providing a secondary attribution point. Lincoln Wheat Cents from 1956 were among the final issues of Brenner's wheat-ear reverse, replaced by Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design in 1959. Collectors should examine the wheat ears and stems for the centripetal spread and verify the die gouge south of RT.
