Description

This 1956 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck on a silver dime planchet, making it a dramatic wrong planchet error where a cent blank was replaced by a 90% silver Roosevelt dime planchet during the striking process. Wrong planchet errors occur when a planchet intended for one denomination is accidentally fed into the press for another, and off-metal strikes on silver planchets are among the most prized examples of this error type. The difference in size, weight, and composition between the cent and dime planchets makes this error immediately obvious upon inspection, as the resulting coin displays the Lincoln cent design on a noticeably smaller and lighter silver disc. Struck at the Denver Mint during the final years of the Wheat Cent series, this variety is cataloged as WPL 001.
