James Wiles reported this variety. The olive branch (left of the heraldic eagle) and laurel branch (right) are rendered with slender stems on John Flanagan's reverse — fine linear elements where even light hub displacement creates measurable offset because of their narrow geometry. The specific involvement of the R of AMERICA, rather than the full inscription, indicates the hub misalignment's visible effect tapered off before reaching adjacent letters, suggesting either a rotational component or a displacement magnitude at the threshold of detectability for that portion of the die. Struck as a 90% silver proof at the Philadelphia Mint, this quarter weighs 6.25 grams and was produced for inclusion in the 1955 proof set — a year whose proof sets are valued by collectors for their relatively modest mintages compared to later decades.
