Description

One of the more dramatic doubled die reverses in the Jefferson Nickel series, the 1954-S DDR-002 displays very strong spread of the left steps between the upper letters NT of MONTICELLO, a feature bold enough to attract attention even without high magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1663 and DMR-008, this variety also carries the cross-reference designation FS-801 in the Fivaz-Stanton reference. Die state documentation records Stage A with the reverse in Early Die State, accompanied by die gouges through the upper letters ERT of LIBERTY. Stage B is listed at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The 1954-S was struck at San Francisco in the final decade of that facility's regular-issue nickel production before its 1955 closure for circulating coinage, making varieties from this mint and era comparatively scarce in higher grades. The combination of strong doubling on a key design element and a well-documented die progression from EDS through LDS provides collectors with a rich attribution framework.
