1954 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Documented in the proof Lincoln Wheat Cent series as WDDR-001, this 1954 issue carries CONECA catalog number PR-1-R-II-C+VI — the PR prefix confirming its proof die status. The doubling is exceptional: both wheat ears and stems show very strong extra thickness, EPU and the dots are affected, and separation toward the center is visible on STATES, AMERICA, UNUM, the right side of NE in ONE, and ENT in CENT, with the strongest displacement on the right wheat ear. This breadth of doubling across virtually every major reverse element makes WDDR-001 one of the most visually impactful doubled die reverses in the proof Wheat Cent series. Obverse die markers include a WNW-to-ESE die scratch through the upper ear and a die crack running SW to NE through the upper hair. The reverse carries no significant markers. Proof Lincoln Wheat Cents were struck from highly polished dies on mirror-finish planchets, making even moderate hub displacement dramatically visible against the reflective field.
