Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1953-S 1¢ WDDR-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-VI, this Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a combination of Class VI extra thickness and Class II separation lines on the left wheat ear, stem, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the doubling strength decreasing from left to right — indicating the hub displacement vector produced maximum effect on the leftmost elements and progressively less on rightward elements. Extra thickness is also present on the right wheat ear. The dual-class designation (Class VI + Class II) indicates two distinct hubbing anomaly mechanisms acting simultaneously: Distorted Hub Doubling producing the extra thickness and a separate displacement producing the separation lines, creating a complex doubling pattern that varies in character across different areas of the die face. Obverse die markers include a die scratch northeast from the lower right E in WE, die scratches west-southwest from the lower left of the first T and east from the upper right of the second T in TRUST, and a short die scratch south-southeast from the bottom center of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse shows a die chip in the upper left wheat lines. The CONECA 2-R-VI cross-reference documents independent recognition within the CONECA catalog system. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1953 in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait. The left-to-right decreasing doubling strength makes the left wheat ear and the E of EPU the primary examination areas for attribution under 7x to 10x magnification.
