1953-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Medium extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, both dots, both wheat stalks, and the full UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend — a broad spread affecting nearly the entire reverse — defines this 1953-S Lincoln Wheat Cent variety cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-001. Cross-references include CONECA 1-R-II-C+VI. The obverse die carries strong markers: heavy die gouges run southwest from the lower left S and to the right of the second T in TRUST. On the reverse, a die dent appears under the lower left E in STATES, a short diagonal die gouge is inside the lower first A in AMERICA, and X-shaped die scratches appear to the right of the lower left stem. This constellation of markers provides an unusually complete fingerprint for attribution. The San Francisco Mint struck approximately 181.8 million Lincoln cents in 1953, and S-mint cents of this era are widely available, making WDDR-001 a reachable variety for collectors willing to search raw coins. The Wexler Variety ID is 1953-S 1¢ WDDR-001.
