Description

An exceptionally unusual variety, SKH-1c-1953-03 documents a spike head on a proof Lincoln Wheat Cent — a striking anomaly because proof dies undergo meticulous preparation and inspection that ordinarily catches surface defects before production begins. Proof coins are struck on specially polished planchets using dies that have been chrome-plated and mirror-finished, making any die gouge or chip conspicuous against the reflective fields. That a spike projection near Lincoln's portrait survived this quality-control process and reached finished proof coins speaks to the limitations even careful inspection faces when defects are small enough to escape notice under workshop conditions.
