1951 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Strong Class II spread toward center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the wheat dots, both wheat ears and stems, and the upper portion of ONE defines WDDR-002 on the 1951 proof Lincoln Wheat Cent. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of hub doubling diagnostics. Cross-referenced as CONECA 3-R-II and cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1951 1¢ Pr WDDR-002, the Class II inward spread compresses design elements toward the coin's center. The affected zones span from the upper motto through the decorative dots to the wheat ears and denomination, covering the full reverse. The inward-directed displacement on the wheat ears and stems creates secondary impressions closer to the vertical axis of the design, while the EPU and ONE elements show corresponding compression. The CONECA 3-R-II cross-reference provides an independent attribution. Victor David Brenner's Wheat Cent reverse, in production from 1909 through 1958, provides the architectural framework for this proof doubled die from the early Cold War era. Die Markers: Obverse: Two short, vertical die gouges can be found to the right of the lower ear. Reverse: A horizontal die scratch can be found on the upper left N of CENT. A short die scratch runs from NNW to SSE on the lower right N of CENT. A short die gouge runs NW from the top of the 2nd T in STATES.
