Fourth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1951 Franklin half dollar, DDR-004 manifests as extra thickness on two of the reverse's most prominent inscriptions: E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Sinnock's reverse design positions E PLURIBUS UNUM above the Liberty Bell and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the upper periphery, and the extra thickness on both inscription groups — separated by the bell and eagle imagery between them — indicates a hub displacement affecting the die broadly rather than in a localized zone. VarietyVista documented this die under UVC-046 and DMR-007, with three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse surfaces show mid die state characteristics, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed MDS designation for Stage B provides a verified intermediate wear reference. The comment "RDV-001b" identifies the specific reverse design variant, connecting this die to the same hub lineage as other Franklin half dollar reverses carrying the 001b designation — and notably, this matches the RDV-001b notation found on the DDR-002 variety for the same 1951 date, suggesting both doubled dies share reverse hub ancestry even though they represent independent working dies. Philadelphia struck approximately 16.8 million Franklin half dollars in 1951, a solid production run for the series. The extra thickness classification indicates the doubling produces visibly heavier letterforms rather than clearly separated secondary images, requiring comparison against a confirmed normal specimen to establish that the inscription weight exceeds standard parameters.
