Recognized as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety, the 1951 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-001 is classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling and displays a tripled spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and MONTICELLO — essentially every major reverse element. Tripled spread means three distinct hub impressions are visible, each slightly displaced from the others, creating two layers of ghost images alongside the primary design. The spread increases from left to right across the legends, a gradient consistent with a tilted hub whose distortion grows progressively across the die face. As a proof struck at Philadelphia with specially prepared dies and polished planchets, mirror-like fields amplify the visibility of each displaced impression, making this variety dramatic even under moderate magnification.
