1951-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

First cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1951 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with extremely close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class II doubling results from distortion of the hub or die during the hubbing process, producing spread that varies in direction and magnitude across different areas of the design rather than following the uniform pattern characteristic of rotated or pivoted hub doubling. Attributed by Whaden Curtis and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1951-D WDDR-001, the variety carries distinctive die markers: a slanted die gouge to the left of Jefferson's lower lip and a small die gouge to the left of the lower portion of L in LIBERTY on the obverse, while the reverse shows a die scratch through the upper portion of UM in UNUM and a die dot above the right arch of Monticello. The extremely close nature of the doubling means collectors should examine suspected specimens under at least 10x magnification, focusing on the individual letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM where the spread is most readily detected.
